Effective dates for ESMA decisions on product intervention measures

The final decision of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) on product intervention measures concerning the marketing, distribution and sale of binary options and contracts for differences (CFDs) has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) on 1 June 2018. Consequently, a prohibition on the marketing, distribution and sale of binary options to non-professional clients will start to apply on 2 July 2018 and a restriction on the marketing, distribution and sale of CFDs to non-professional clients will start to apply on 1 August 2018.

On 1 June 2018 ESMA also published a Q&A document which provides answers to certain questions regarding the practical implementation of the decisions.
